Hello Gredos, nice to meet you

There is no official appellation of origin for Gredos, it extends into three provinces: Avila, Madrid and Toledo. Located a scenic 90-minute drive west of Madrid, it finds its home in the Sistema mountain range which boasts some of the oldest and most interesting soil types for grape growing in Spain.

Regarded as a ‘best kept secret’ among insiders, this region is starting to gain a serious reputation among wine lovers. The combination of the soil type, high altitude and old vines result in a quality potential in the area that is phenomenal. It is the Garnacha that seems to be taking centre stage at the moment due to the blue granite soils and high altitude which lend themselves to a lively style of wine that’s very exciting to drink. The area is still home to a number of unusual varieties however, most of which aren’t planted anywhere else in Spain. So, here’s an area where you have to be in the know to know about it, and when you know about it, you have to be more in the know to know about the not known about grape varieties which are producing some sublimes wines. That’s a lot of knowing, but we promise you it is worth it.

Unfortunately, many of these remote mountain villages with wine making potential are facing an uncertain future. The wine cooperatives on which they depend are closing down, that coupled with the younger generation moving to bigger cities has left the area in a state of wineless despair. Many young winemakers are now taking to the area to work with Gredos’ rich and diverse heritage of grape growing.

One of our producers, Peninsula Vinicultores has started the Mountain Wine project, partnering with a number of local producers in two of the key mountain ranges – Sierra de Gredos and Sierra de Gata – to reinvigorate the vineyards and sustain the communities who farm them.

Sustainability is at the heart of Peninsula’s Mountain Wine project’s mission.

We will have two wines from the Mountain Wine project, the first is Vino de Montana. This is a field blend from Sierras de Gata and Gredos. The second is Cadalso which is only Garnacha and only from Gredos (arriving June 2018). We love discovering new areas and we think this is only the beginning for Gredos.
