The founder of HGA Bodegas, Horacio Gormez Araujo was born at the foot of what is now the largest continuous planting of Albariño in private hands in the Rias Baixas DO. 100Ha in size, and unusually for the region it is planted on steep terraces. The vineyard, Altos de Torona is located in the Rosal sub district of Rias Baixas. Torre de Ermelo is typical of the sub-zone, aromatic, fruit driven, but with dry minerality and stone fruit character.

The Finca la Emperatriz vineyard is a very stony, cool-climate vineyard giving relatively high acidity and long ripening times. More specifically, the single vineyard of Finca la Emperatriz is approx 40% very old vineyard (planted in the 40’s) and 60% vineyards planted largely between 1996 and 2000. This vineyard produces two wines in commercial quantities, Crianza and Reserva. Of course, the priority is to make an excellent reserva, so the crianza ends up being mostly produced from the younger vines.
